I’m a bit of an overachiever. I go through phases, especially with writing (and reading, actually) where I’ll have no motivation to write, no ideas, nothing but then out of nowhere I’ll come up with a whole bunch of ideas all at once and I decide to start working on every single one at the same time. That’s the issue I’m dealing with right now, I have about 10 posts in the draft stages, but all of them require A LOT of work and they’ve taken a lot longer to finish than I expected (did I mention I’m a bad judge of time – how long it will take me to get somewhere, or finish something).
I recently watched Ariel Bissett’s (a fellow UofG Alumni and awesome booktuber) new video where she created a book tag – the Ruler of Books tag and thought it would be a lot of fun to do in the meantime since I hate not getting a post up. Check out the tag below:

If you were the Ruler of Books…
1/ What book would you make everyone read?
The ADSoM series is one of my new favourites and I think V.E. Schwab’s writing is absolutely beautiful. I would make everyone read it so I had more people to fangirl with, if I’m being honest because I just finished AGoS and I’m having a bit of a crisis over the ending and the fact that I have to wait another year for the last book.
The Grimm’s Fairy Tales have been favourites of mine for most of my life, and I would make everyone read them because they are so important to a lot of the media that we consume nowadays. People sometimes don’t realize how much those stories have influenced contemporary storytelling, tropes, etc. Also, the originals are better than the Disney versions and I find it sad that most people don’t know the actual story of Rumpelstiltskin.
2/ What would you abolish in book construction?
Oversized books, or books in the same series that aren’t the same sizes. Okay, this happens more with comics than with novels but my biggest pet peeve is when companies publish books that are so big that they don’t fit on a normal sized bookshelf. I currently have my Buffy comics stacked on top of my bookshelf because the only format I could find certain issues of the series in was a GIANT library edition and it drives me crazy every time I look at it. I have a few novels and textbooks like this as well. STOP DOING THIS. You can make a larger format book that still fits on a shelf.
Also, when books in the same series aren’t the same sizes. WHY?! What would possesses you to make a series of books that aren’t the same size or that don’t line up nicely when placed side-by-side on a shelf? I don’t understand the thought process behind this. Stop it.
3/ What author would you commission to write you any book?
Let’s go with a creative team – Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky and it would be any comic I wanted. I love the relationship between these two and the work they do together is just SO GOOD. I would probably just tell them to write whatever they wanted – like Chip’s infamous Inconsolable Spider-man perhaps?
4/ What book would you demote to the library basement to make room for new books?
Ender’s Game. Oh boy, Ender’s Game. I can’t explain to you how much I’ve loathed this book since I was forced to read it in school. It’s the absolute worst and if you love the book that much then you can make the effort to find it in the basement, but I’ll be upstairs reading all the GOOD books in my library.
5/ What cover artist would you commission to make a mural?
The artist (or artists) that do the Barnes & Noble collectible edition classics. Have you seen these masterpieces? They are stunning! I don’t tend to desire books just for how they would look on a shelf but these are so beautiful that I’ve considered it countless times, so the artist(s) that created these amazing works of art, please paint a mural for my world of books.
6/ What characters face would you put on a coin?
Can I choose a comic book character? Because I would totally put Carol Danvers or Hannah from Rat Queens on a coin. There aren’t enough badass ladies on currency, so clearly my world of books would need to feature all the badass ladies that I love so much, and are any of you surprised that I would pick Hannah or Carol Danvers? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
7/ What book would you award the “Ruler of Books” 2016 Prize to?
A Gathering of Shadows. This book you guys! I mentioned it already in this tag, but when you come across a book that’s the second in a series and it doesn’t fall victim to second book syndrome but instead is potentially even better than the first…you have to sing its praises.
I hope you enjoyed this fun little book tag post! I’m not going to tag anyone specific – instead I’d love to hear some of your answers in the comments below.
I’m working on some really fun Everyday Cosplay posts right now, so watch out for those in the next few weeks. Until then, I look forward to reading your Ruler of Books responses.
