Fangirl Favourites – January 2016

Let’s be honest, January has not been the best start to 2016. The awful luck that’s been following me around personally aside; we’ve had to deal with the deaths of two people that impacted most, if not all of us in some way – David Bowie and Alan Rickman. So, I know I’m not alone in wanting to be done with January. But we can’t end the month without a Fangirl Favourites, and while it has been hard to find positives this month, there are a few. Here’s what I’ve been loving:

Gilmore Girls

I love TV, that’s no secret…but more than anything, I love re-watching old favourites. I regularly do a full Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon, but it’s been a looooong time since I took on a re-watch of Gilmore Girls.

At some point around Christmas I caved and started Gilmore Girls from the beginning, and oh man, I think I’m just as invested, if not more so than I was when I was watching the show as it aired. I’ve already made it halfway through Season 3…

Also HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?! It was just officially confirmed, WE ARE GETTING A MINISERIES. *hyperventilates*

Silver Torches

This month I discovered Silver Torches and their album Heatherfield. I’ve been getting into a lot of bands lately that have that 70’s/alt rock/americana vibe to them – this album is definitely that and it’s SO GOOD. Check it out:

P.S. The new Chvrches album Every Open Eye is pretty fantastic too.

Giant Days

I finally got my hands on a copy of Giant Days Vol. 1 this month, and oh boy…it was definitely worth the wait. It’s super sassy, the art is really cute and it’s just an all around fun take on university life. You know what? I’m not going to do it justice…so here’s a little blurb from Boom! Studios:

Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends because their dorm rooms were next to each other. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of hand-wringing boys, “personal experimentation,” influenza, mystery-mold, nu-chauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of “academia,” they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive.

See, you totally want to read it now right? If you don’t…I’m sorry, you must have misread that, go back and try again.

Geeks & Lattes is now SELF-HOSTED!

What’s that? The blog looks a little different? Oh, yeah…that’s just because I did a thing. On a whim, and a great deal I decided to take the plunge and self-host Geeks & Lattes! In the process I did a little work on the blog, and had to change the theme but self-hosting means there’s a lot more room to grow and do exciting things with this blog in 2016! What do you think? Oh! And have you seen the amazing commissioned portrait by Nic ter Horst on my About page? I love it.

I watched so much Gilmore Girls this month that when my car broke down I told my dad I was “SO SMAD AHHH!”

That about wraps it up for this month’s Fangirl Favourites. As always, let me know in the comments what you’ve been loving this month and what you’re looking forward to in February!

  1. Oooh, thanks for tip on Giant Days. I’ll probably wait until it’s collected in trades, but I love having new graphic novels to look forward to. 🙂

  2. I re-watched Gilmore Girls last year and had a lot of fun with it! Before that I hadn’t seen it in at LEAST 5 years. It was interesting to watch it again after all that time, because I started to realize I didn’t feel the same way about some characters as I did when I was younger. During the re-watch I learned that I don’t really like Lorelai. I mean half of her problems (because she’s always having problems) would have been resolved, or not have even happened in the first place, if she wasn’t lying and hiding things from people ALL THE TIME! Sorry for the rant, hahah.

    1. Haha, yeah. That is frustrating, but I just love her sass and her relationship with people so much that I tend to ignore it (for the most part). I’ve been getting annoyed with certain things more during this re-watch too, but also I’m paying more attention to the story lines this time around. Stuff that I know I overlooked when I watched it as it aired, and during my sporadic re-watches over the years.

  3. Oh I think I’ll be checking out Giant Days! It looks fun. I’ve been loving the new season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Waiting a week between episodes is killing me!!!

    1. My dad and I watch S.H.E.I.L.D together and we’re about 5 or 6 episodes behind. We’re hoping to catch up on it over the next few weeks so we’ll be ready when it comes back from hiatus.

  4. I haven’t really gotten into Gilmore Girls, though my best friend in high school loooooooved it. I did like the witty comebacks between the mother and daughter though. Might have to check that out – without the husband. I don’t think that he will approve of watching hours on end of it.

    1. Their witty banter and sass is just too good, that’s ultimately what hooked me. I find myself more invested in the actual story lines now that I’m re-watching it again.

  5. I think I need to watch Gilmore Girls! *adds to list of ever growing shows to watch*
Shame it’s not on Netflix 🙁 boo.

Your site looks very snazzy btw, congrats on going self-hosted! ?

    1. It’s not on Netflix there?! That’s awful and also surprising because Canadian Netflix is notoriously bad for variety. You definitely need to watch it though. It’s amazing.

And that you! I’m really excited about it. 🙂
